There are so many people out there that run into the same exact problem. And this has to stop. So if you really want to Start Writing Code then you have come to the right place!
My name is Derek Jensen and my goal is to help you on your journey into the world of code by making it quick, simple, and fun! I am here to help you achieve all of your coding goals, including learning to code for fun, creating your own websites and mobile apps, getting a new job in software, learning a new language or technology, showcasing your coding skills for a promotion or just improving your current coding skills.
I love to write code, but I also love to help others learn new things and get better at what they love.
As a software engineer (just a fancy name for someone that writes code), I have been fortunate to work at some pretty cool places like Redbox and DocuSign. Working in places like these has allowed me to help build really high quality software that is used by millions of people all throughout the world. Most importantly, it has also allowed me to be surrounded by a lot of really bright people that have helped me get better at what I do everyday.
I have also spent the last 5 years creating, writing, recording, and teaching online content about programming for Tuts+. Tuts+ is a phenomenal online resource for professionals and aspiring programmers to learn more about their favorite technologies. Because I spent so much time working with Tuts+, I have gained a great understanding of the process of creating and producing high quality content that looks good and is easily consumable on the web.
With all this experience in these three avenues, I’m combining my main passions into one goal. Helping those that want to learn to code for many different reasons, such as:
- Starting a new career as a software engineer
- Improving your skills for a promotion
- Building a website for your personal business
- Creating a mobile app for you and your friends
- Writing software that will become the next big thing
- Increasing your marketability with an expanded skillset
- Becoming an online software freelancer
- Just learning to write a little code
If this is you, you have come to the right place!
Why Start Writing Code
I taught myself to write code. Several times.
Yes, I have a college degree in computer science, but that isn’t where I truly learned to write code. I learned in the trenches. I learned how to write code, on my own, in my first job in computers. And that job had absolutely nothing to do with writing code. But I found a way to convince my colleagues and my manager that building a new application from scratch would improve the way that we delivered solutions to customers. And away I went.
It was in my software journeys several years later that I realized something very important was missing from the online learning landscape when it comes to learning to code. Two things as a matter of fact:
- An unbiased opinion to help lead newcomers to learn to write code and not direct them
- A resource to help learners make sense of and successfully navigate through all the code learning content on the web
And thus, Start Writing Code was born.
The purpose of Start Writing Code is to help you achieve your goals when it comes to learning to write code. I want to help you achieve your goals and reach the next level no matter where you are in your learning journey.
All of this will be accomplished through guidance and not a forced direction.
Everyone learns differently, and that very important fact is taken very seriously here. Using that knowledge, I want to help you build a concrete learning path that is specific to you and fits into your life, not the other way around.
I hope that in your time here at Start Writing Code you are able to find exactly what you need to succeed in your goals. If not, please let me know what I can do better to help you succeed.
Let Me Know What You Need
Without motivated learners like you, I can’t create all the quality content needed. So, if for some reason you have any questions, concerns, issues, or other needs in general, please reach out to me and let me know what is on your mind.
